Google Testing New Phone Service for Google Fiber User

Google is doing a secret phone service testing for Google Fiber users. Launched five years ago (in 2010), Google Fiber is a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) service in the United States, providing broadband internet and cable television to a small and slowly increasing number of locations. Google Fiber is still relatively new, and many  people don’t know what it is and what if offers. But if you do, then you saw the phone service coming. With the addition of phone service, the company will become a triple-play provider: voice, data, and television. According to Washington Post, Google is sending out invites to Google Fiber subscribers to participate in the “Fiber Trusted Tester” program.

Using the Google Fiber , subscribers can use one phone number for every device they own, from smartphones to landlines. Apart from this some features of the spam filtering, do-not-disturb modes, voicemails emailed, call screening, etc are the perks of the new program. The invites have been sent to people who have signed up for the  Fiber Trusted Tester program. They are given a week to reply, following which (whoever agrees) Google technicians will be sent over to their place to install the phone service. For now, no one knows for sure which cities are being targeted or what will be the  cost in addition to fiber internet and cable TV. We only know that Google Fiber currently offers three tiers services that includes a free internet service with 5Mbps download speeds, a 1-gigabit internet service for $70 a month, and a 1-gigabit service with cable for $130 a month.

According to the Washington Post the secret Google email sent to potential testers read,”Please be aware that testing Google Fiber Phone will require a service visit in which a Fiber team member will come to your home to install a piece of equipment. If you’re selected for this Trusted Tester group, we’ll be actively seeking your feedback—both good and bad—so that we can improve Fiber Phone once we launch it to all of our customers.”

Reminding the participant that the testing program needs to be kept a secret, the mail read, “Please remember that the Trusted Tester program gives you early access to features which are not yet available to the public, so please help us keep this confidential.”

Currently Google offers a mobile internet service called Project Fi that is a low-cost cellular service which utilizes both T-Mobile and Sprint’s networks. The program offers phone and data service to Android smartphones and a data-only service to Android tablets and iPads. It marked for the first time that Google’s wireless service can be used on another operating system besides Android, only for data.
