Samsung’s Galaxy X Device May Be A Folding Smartphone With Dual Screens

Samsung, which recently released the Galaxy S8 to great critical and commercial success, has been working on a new device. Called the Galaxy X, the new device harkens back to the golden age of mobiles when foldable phones ruled the roost. The new smartphone will be a foldable device as well and may also sport dual screens. Samsung, reportedly, has already started placing orders for the phone to start production.

A clarification must be made here. The new Samsung Galaxy X smartphone will not resemble the foldable phones of yore. There will be dual displays each of 5 inches and these two surfaces will be interconnected. The design will be completely bezel-less. Samsung will look to producing only 2,000 to 3,000 of these new devices. However, it is important to remember that these new devices won’t be migrating to ordinary users soon. The reason is simple: foldable phones are known to be divisive and many users do not take kindly to the foldable form.

The device which now has been rumoured about for several years now is said to feature organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels which can be folded open by up to 180 degrees. These two panels are connected by a single hinge right around the middle. The foldable form factor is also on display in the patents filed in 2015 by Samsung.

Lately, there has been news that the foldable phone with the OLED display was to be released sometime later this year. However, Samsung decided to postpone the launch until 2018; it wanted to be sure that such a product would be advisable to launch in this time and age. After all, Samsung will first and foremost aim to ensuring its newly launched phones, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, are successful. It is also possible that this new device will come out when the product life cycle of the Galaxy S8 ends.
