Samsung Android Go Smartphone May Not Run on Stock Android: Report

A new Android Go edition based device is expected to be launched by Samsung. While there has been no official confirmation of the same from the company, plenty of rumors regarding the smartphone has been doing the rounds since the last few weeks. Now, some images of the Android Go smartphone has been leaked online. The images indicate that the smartphone comes with some Android Go edition based applications like Google Go, Maps Go, and YouTube Go. It also shows that the stock Android experience is missing from the handset.

As per the leaked images shared by SamMobile, the unnamed Samsung smartphone does not appear to have thin bezels on the sides or a wider aspect ratio display. The handset, however, does feature some Android Go based apps like Google Go, YouTube Go and maps Go. The smartphone is shown to run on Android 8.1 Oreo Go edition but lacks the stock Android experience. It features Samsung Experience UX instead.

It may be noted that the purpose of Android Go is to offer an enriching experience to the users on low-end smartphones with modest specifications. Notably, the official Android Go website also states that all devices based on Android Go do not feature the stock Android experience. This is probably the reason why it is missing on the unnamed smartphone from Samsung.

However the Samsung Experience UX is similar to the stock Android experience in many respects and it also features on-screen navigation keys, a quick launch panel with basic functionalities like toggling WiFi, torch, sound, Bluetooth, portrait mode, etc.

As far as the specifications are concerned, a Geekbench listing of the device last month had revealed some of its specs. According to the listing, the device may feature a 5-inch Super AMOLED display powered by an Exynos 7570 SoC and coupled with 1GB of RAM. It may boast 16GB of inbuilt storage space. On the imaging front, it may feature an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The device will be fueled by a 2,600mAh battery.
