One of the most striking pieces of technology at large today is definitely the concept and implementation fo Virtual Reality in the latest devices of today. VR experience, in today’s world, is huge with the viewer getting an immensely satisfying Virtual Reality surround view when it comes to games, live sport or movie and that is something every big company is striving to incorporate in their devices. One of the essential components necessary for a superior VR experience is the VR headset, which has already become on of the hottest selling technology products of today. Most of the top tech companies have come up with their own VR headsets made compatible with a wide range of VR enabled devices.
The big players of the VR industry today like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive do provide the most premium of VR experiences but come at quite hefty price tags. In comparison to these, the other tech giants like Google and Samsung have come up with their own VR headsets which bear a reasonable price tag keeping in mind the different section of people who would love to own the Virtual reality enhancement tool. Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Daydream view are already hot products in the market with a whole whole lot of people opting to go for these products.
Samsung Gear VR vs Google Daydream View
Android Phone Compatibility
At launch, though, there are only two official Daydream-ready phones: Google’s own Pixel and Pixel XL. However, as per the latest news, the new Moto Z line-up which includes the Moto Z and Moto Z force will also be one of the first few devices which are pegged to be compatible with the Google Daydream view.
Samsung’s flagship line of devices announced in the quarter 2016-17 will all be compatible with the company’s Gear VR headset. In the short term, Samsung has a big compatibility advantage – with all of the company’s 2015-16 flagships (six phones in total) in the mix. As of now, the Gear VR is best compatible with the Samsung smartphones predominantly. However, there have been news regarding the fact that Samsung and Oculus are going to expand its compatibility to other android devices as well. So in terms of device capability, the Gear Vr does have the edge over the Daydream view owing to the larger number of devices the VR headset is compatible with.
Another additional point when it comes to smartphone compatibility is that none of the headsets will be compatible with Apple’s flagship line of iPhones.
Design
The first thing Google emphasised about the Daydream View is comfort. Most VR headsets are very obviously gadgets, made of plastic and rubber. The headset is made of soft, lightweight fabric, though Google hasn’t specified the materials used in the fabric. For the sake of cleanliness, the face mask can also be removed and washed. The Gear VR, meanwhile, is made of plastic with a matte finish and lined with a rubber face mask. Both headsets have been designed to accommodate users with glasses. With the daydream View, there is no hassle involving wires as Users simply slide their phone into the headset and fasten the clasp, and the phone and headset will connect wirelessly. However, with the Gear VR, users need to plug their phone in via the micro-USB connection.
The Gear VR is also 57 percent heavier, only accentuating View’s sleek/light design.
Both the VR headsets bear a superior design quality but in this aspect, on a comparative basis, the Daydream View by Google outruns Samsung’s Gear VR by miles.
Technical Specifications
#Display : All of the Gear VR-ready Galaxy phones have ultra-high QHD resolution. Between the two Daydream-friendly phones at launch, one is QHD (Google Pixel XL) and the other a mere 1080p (Pixel), which won’t look quite as crisp through the lenses. both of the VR headsets sport AMOLED display panels which are an important pre-requisite for VR technology.
In both headsets, the FOV will also be a little smaller if you use a phone with a smaller screen inside (Galaxy S7, S6, Pixel) as opposed to a phablet (Galaxy S7 edge, S6 edge+, Note 5, Pixel XL).
#Software: With help from Oculus and its legion of VR developers (the Gear VR gets content exclusively from the Oculus Store that pre-installs when you first use the headset), it has by far today’s biggest and best selection of mobile virtual reality content edging over the Daydream View by Google which does require Android Nougat for starters and it it essentially inherits two years’ worth of Google Cardboard apps and games.
