Reliance Jio Prime Now Has Over 50 Million Subscribers

With Reliance Jio Prime subscription drive coming to an end, the company has managed to clinch over 50 million subscribers, an insider has reported. That’s almost half of the 100 million Reliance Jio subscribers who are willing to pay to upgrade.

An official announcement might be made after March 31 (when the membership drive ends), according to the insider who didn’t want to be named. If you haven’t subscribed to Prime yet, you just a day left. For those who don’t want to be Prime members will automatically become subscribers of postpaid or prepaid plans.

To get people to subscribe to the plan, Jio had been offering up to 120GB data free and the option to choose data packs starting from Rs 149 – under the one-year membership of Rs 99.

Earlier reports suggested that Jio was lagging behind in fulfilling their target of over 50 million subscribers. The company had been thinking of extending the deadline, but that’s unnecessary now that Reliance has reached their goal.

“The Jio Prime membership scheme has received enthusiastic response from Jio customers. We are pleased to note that millions of customers are joining the scheme every day, signifying their interest in the attractive offers,” a spokesman for the company told ET. 

Reliance is expecting a huge growth of over 50% in market revenue in the next three/four years owing to greater data consumption. The company has been responsible for consolidation in the Indian telecom industry. While Reliance Communications is in the process of merging with Aircel. Idea Cellular and Vodafone India too has announced merger. Their combined entity of has over 400 million subscribers that topple Bharati Airtel. By the end of last 2016,  Bharti Airtel had a market share of 33.1%, followed by Vodafone India with a 23.5% and Idea Cellular at 18.7%. These are followed by Tata Teleservices, Aircel and RCom held 6.2%, 5.5%, and 4%, respectively.
