MWC 2018: Sony Likely to Launch New Series of Smartphones as per Teaser

Sony has reportedly released a teaser from its official Xperia account on Twitter just a few days ahead of MWC 2018. The teaser has revealed that Sony will unveil a new smartphone on February 26, a day after the Galaxy S9 and S9 plus flagship devices are unveiled by Samsung.

As per some reports, the Japanese tech giant is likely to launch a new Xperia flagship device which may be dubbed as Xperia XZ1 Compact edition. Apart from this model, Sony is also likely to launch the Xperia XZ2 flagship device at the MWC event.

The teaser does not reveal anything about the specs or design of the new device, but it does provide a hint about the future plans of Sony regarding the latest flagship devices. The video shows a hand that is receiving some ripples cascading down from the top in a total duration of just 23 seconds. This might be a hint about a new design language or a new form of a feedback system with a user interface that does not involve the use of any physical buttons. Apple has already done it with a touch supported Touch-ID home button starting with the iPhone 7 and Sony may tread on the same path following Apple.

If we focus on the curved design of the ripples, it could imply the use of 2.5D curved glass technology in its latest flagship. It may also feature a flexible display panel that could be wrapped around the edges of the device, imparting a premium look. However, the curved ripples could also imply better sound experience inspired from Sony Bravia television models.

If some rumors are to be believed, the new flagship device could arrive with 18:9 aspect ratio 5.7-inch OLED display and powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset and a minimum of 6GB of RAM. The device could also feature an 18-megapixel rear camera and a 13-megapixel front-facing camera with up to 128GB of internal storage space. It could also come with IP68 certification providing resistance to water and dust.
