Epic games, the developer of popular game Fortnite has plans to implement new matchmaking rules that will ensure players playing with keyboard and mouse on consoles are only matched with others playing on the same configurations.
The revelation comes from a thread on the developer-supported Fortnite Battle Royal subreddit on Reddit. An Epic Games community manager by the handle name ‘JustMooney1’ addressed the players concern regarding keyboard and mouse support on the PS4 gaming console and said “We’re actually working on some matchmaking tech, on the way, that’ll pair you against folks based on your choice of peripherals. More info on this coming next week, but tl;dr if you’re on KB+M you’ll be against KB+M.”
Another Reddit user followed up on this reply and voiced his concern about one of the many problematic facets of the game, this time using a game controller on PC. It may be recalled that Fornite supports cross-platform play across all the available platforms like PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PS4. Fortnite is also available on iOS and Mac devices.
Another Epic Games representative by the handle ‘MrPopoTFS’ did not answer the question directly but stated that the developer will release more information in this regard “next week which should hopefully clear up some commonly asked questions around this”.
Sony’s PS4 is currently the only console out of the three which includes the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch which supports keyboard and mouse. Meanwhile, Microsoft is reported to be planning to bring keyboard and mouse support to the Xbox One to improve the experience of the gamers. A leaked presentation revealed that Microsoft may provide a tool to the developers that can detect whether a keyboard or mouse is connected and then restrict those players accordingly.
Microsoft is also reportedly working on a new API that will allow game developers to detect accessories that mimic game controller inputs and block them.
