Meizu recently launched Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) 2016. Currently the device is running on demo version software which the company informs will be updated with improved features through the next OTA update. If you are at Barcelona and are happen to be checking out the Mobile World Conference then you can pop into the Ubuntu stand in Hall 3 at booth 3J30. One can get a hands-on experience on the latest Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition. The Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition is the fifth Ubuntu device and the second joint launch between Meizu and Canonical in the last twelve months. Available to pre-orders now, the handset is priced at $369.99.
Its probably worth mentioning that Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition looks uncannily similar to the iPhone S6 Plus. Like the iPhone its got 2.5D glass up front, which gently slopes off at the edge before meeting the aluminium sides. The device has a 5.7inch Full HD AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution. Although it lacks QHD resolution like that of other high-end smartphone – LG G5 and Galaxy S7 but, the device has got AMOLED technology that provides excellent viewing angles even under the harsh show floor lights and makes for excellent colour. The screen was pretty reflective but lacks the brightness levels found in its rival high-smartphones.
The handset runs the mobile version of Canonical’s Linux-based mobile operating system. What the software does, is that it unlocks features of Ubuntu’s desktop operating system, like Scopes, sources that replace the traditional home screen and effectively themed feeds incorporating multiple apps. Another feature that you’d find also exists in the desktop operating system is the Video Scope, that allows users to see videos alongside popular videos from YouTube and Vimeo, all on the same screen. The device comes with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM. The device sports a new USB-C connector at the bottom.

The Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition has got octa-core Samsung Exynos 7420 processor (the processor also runs in Samsung Galaxy S6. The camera is 21-megapixels that features laser-assisted phase-detect autofocus and a Hi-Fi audio chip from ESS, complete with f/2.2, 31mm and dual-LED flash. As promised the camera was descent enough and manages to capture natural colours and full detailed picture even under the harsh lighting of Canonical’s stand.
Key Specifications of Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition:
- Display: 5.7inch
- Resolution: 1080p
- RAM: 3GB
- Storage: 32GB
- Operating System: Canonical’s Linux-based mobile OS
- Camera: 21-megapixels
As for performance, the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition suffers from some lags due to the early nature of Canonical’s Ubuntu mobile software. The device sometimes feels slow to respond to taps and doesn’t register every input reliably.
Its probably worth mentioning that in 2013, Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, tried to crowdfund a smartphone but could reach its goal as they were short of funds, by a wide margin of $19 million. The smartphobe is going to be available from the month of march and one can sign-up page on Meizu’s website that will alert anyone whao ahs registeres when the Pro 5 is available to buy in March.

Wrap Up:
As such of the smartphone landscape is dominated by Android and iOS, its understandable that any attempt to.introduce an alternative operating system fails. This knowledge comes speak from experience. BlackBerry switched to Android, Firefox OS, and Microsoft is investing loads into developing Android and iOS apps, much more than they are spending in the research and manufacture of their next Lumia. But anyway, Meizu is pretty excited about what they have in store for fans, as VP at Meizu, Li Nan, puts it “We have some interesting plans and so we’re looking forward to further deepening our partnership with Canonical in the future. We look forward to an exciting future together.”
