Google VR Cardboard Camera Finally Comes to iOS

Google has finally released its Google Cardboard Camera app for iOS devices. The free app will let innovative shutterbugs capture images in 360-degree for later viewing on a Google Cardboard viewer. Also, in the updated version of the app–for both Android and iOS users–there is now a useful sharing feature that goes beyond simply making your 360-degree images available on Google Photos.

Google launched its Cardboard VR back in 2014 as the tech giant wanted everyone “to experience virtual reality in a simple, fun and inexpensive way.” To make things more interesting, Google launched the Cardboard Camera app in December 2015. The app was exclusively for android platforms previously but has now been made available for iOS users as well.

The app allows users to take 3-D panorama-style photos which can be explored in all directions once saved and viewed on a VR headset like Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard is available at the reasonable price of $15 and the Cardboard Camera App is free. In order to take the photo, a person needs to turn around in a single spot while pointing the phone’s camera at the scene ahead. Once you tap on the capture icon, you have to move the photo slowly to get a good panoramic shot of what it is that you want to capture. Once you’re done with it, the app gives a final result of the image that you have captured. Be wary that you need to be very steady with the picture that you are capturing and you would require a lot of patience as well. You need to move your smartphone very slowly to get a good picture and Google even warns you if you’re moving the smartphone faster than required.

Google’s iOS Cardboard Camera app is a great entry point into the quickly growing VR industry.

It isn’t a very impressively worded pitch but Google has managed to make VR technology affordable and accessible and now iPhone users won’t have to feel left out. One can also use the app to record sound while clicking the photo, making the experience more immersive. Google has also introduced a new sharing feature on the app. Users can now generate shareable links to their photos that can be emailed, messaged, posted in apps or on the web.

Google will soon launch its Daydream VR platform that we were given a small preview of in May. New leaks reveal that we will have more details about it at an event on October 4 when Google will also be launching its new smartphones like the Pixel and the Pixel Xl.
