The successor to the flagship chipset of the year, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, is now official. This is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and this new processor is destined to power several of next year’s flagship devices. Being a direct successor to the SD 835, this new chipset will provide better image processing, better graphics performance, better energy efficiency, and a lot more safety.
We have earlier reported how the next-gen Samsung Galaxy S9 will arrive with this chipset and will possibly eat up most of the initial batches. In fact, the next-gen Xiaomi Mi 7 is also said to be arriving with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. The details about the SD 845 are remarkably scarce and it is not known what the best features of the chipset will be. Incidentally, the details of the SD 845 were first announced at the Snapdragon Summit in Maui, in Hawaii.
While the Samsung Galaxy S9, the Galaxy S9+, the OnePlus 6 as well as the next generation Google Pixel phones are destined to use it, we will have to see if the LG G7 will use it. Indeed, the Mi 7 situation is also a tad dicey as this year’s Xiaomi Mi 6 did not use the Snapdragon 835 although the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 did use it. Some Windows 10 laptops and other peripherals might use the SD 845 as well.
GizBot reports that like this year’s Snapdragon 835 SoC, the next flagship SD 845 chipset too will be based on the 10nm manufacturing process. We had reported this as early as June this year, incidentally. The 845 will also support the X20 LTE modem which is capable of providing gigabit connectivity on supported networks, a feature not likely in India since no network currently supports this type of high-speed modem.
While details are very sketchy, we believe that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC will also support the shooting of 360-degree videos in high-fidelity quality besides increasing battery life. Qualcomm has also teased support for an immersive VR experience as well as improved inbuilt security with the much-hyped chip-level encryption. Stay tuned for more updates.
