Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date: CD Projekt RED‘s upcoming Sci-fi RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is currently in development. Cyberpunk 2077, featuring a vast open-world setting, is based on the action RPG titled Cyberpunk 2020 from the 1990s. As is clear from the game’s title, it will be based in the distant future “where advanced technologies have become both the salvation and the curse of humanity.”
Cyberpunk 2077 got its first ever teaser trailer back in 2013, but unfortunately, the makers are yet to announce a release date for the title. While most fans of the developer’s earlier titles were hoping for the upcoming game to be released before the end of 2017, it now looks like Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch may be affected by unforeseen events within the company.
It has been rumoured for a long time that CD Projekt RED is facing ownership problems. Now this has become clear, as the developer has recently issued a call for a shareholders meeting on November 29, driving the media to wonder if this is in preparation for battling a takeover attempt.
If this is indeed the case, then it is safe to assume that the titles the company is presently working on will be hampered. At the moment, CD Projekt RED is focused on two two triple-A RPG titles between now and 2021, one of which is Cyberpunk 2077. Between the two, Cyberpunk 2077 will be the first to come out, considering the fact that this is the game that has been in development for quite a while. It is also a known fact that the company has recruited a team that is even larger than the one that worked on their acclaimed 2013 title, The Witcher 3. All that is very likely to be affected by the company’s current state of internal affairs.
Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date
Taking all these into account, it appears that Cyberpunk 2077′s release may be pushed back. However, speculations state that CD Projekt RED may launch the game in 2018. One report, in particular, points out that Cyberpunk 2077 may only be halfway into its developmental phase, as work on the engine for the upcoming game was begun around the time The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in 2013. Judging by that, and considering that Cyberpunk 2077 takes its makers the same amount of time as The Witcher 3, the game should be completed by 2018. Moreover, if CD Projekt RED wants to launch another game in 2021, then the company should begin working on it in 2018 itself (they had already said that work on the next title will begin only after Cyberpunk 2077 is completed). So, the source argues, the latest we can expect Cyberpunk 2077 to land on our consoles is by 2018.
If all these conditions pan out perfectly, then this might spell good news for the developer’s fans. However, keeping in mind the upcoming shareholders’ meeting, we can’t say anything for sure.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently being developed for the Windows PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Watch the official teaser trailer below.
