In an extended developers diary, studio head Rod Fergusson and game director Tyler Bielman explain that the game is getting ready for a soft launch. Notably, a soft launch is a practice when mobile games launch in some individual territories to get the game rolling on a smaller front, similar to a beta rollout. Since Gears Pop is ready for launch, albeit, on a smaller scale, The Coalition has decided to reveal the first gameplay footage of the game to the audience. The footage provides an extended look at a single match that lasts for 3 minutes and has a striking resemblance to the mobile game Clash Royale.
Bielman further explains that their main goal in transitioning Gears to a new format was to deliver on a few pillars of the Gears Universe, notably the so-called explosive moments along with the familiar Gears characters. Notably, the game will allow the players to build a team of Gears Heroes and villains to take on each other in a 3vs3 match in an arena setting.
Gears Pop is one of the three games developed by The Coalition in collaboration with Microsoft Studios alongside Gears Tactics for Windows PC and Gears 5 for Xbox One. Gears Pop is a spinoff of the series for mobile devices which is based on Funko’s Pop toyline. Gears 5 has got a trailer released at E3 alongside the official announcement. Gears Pop and Gears 5 are scheduled to be released globally in 2019 although Gears Tactics is yet to get a release date, The Coalition is expected to make an official announcement about Gears Tactics by the end of the year.
