MediaTek has launched a new System on Chip (SoC) to advanced features for budget and mid-range smartphones. Called MediaTek Helio P22, the SoC is currently in the works and is expected to be made available by the end of the second quarter of 2018.
This is the first mid-range chipset from the company that has been designed using TMSC 12nm FinFET process. The chipset can support aspect ratio as high as 20:9 and full HD+ display with a resolution of 1600 X 720 pixels. The processor of the chipset features a 64-bit octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 that has been clocked at 2.0GHz. It also features the latest MG PowerVR GE8320 GPU running at 650MHz.
Apart from that, the chipset can support up to 6GB of LPDDR3 or LPDDR4 RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage. Talking about the optical features, the Helio P22 chipset can support a 21-megapixel camera module or a dual camera setup with a 13-megapixel and an 8-megapixel sensor. The chipset also comes with electronic image stabilization features and also supports bokeh effect. For better low-light imaging, the chipset is equipped with multi-frame noise reduction and clear-image zoom technology. The chipset is also equipped with a new Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) engine.
Additionally, the camera can also automatically minimize aliasing and grain with auto distortion removal techniques using the latest chipset. The Instant-AE of the chipset is powered by a Camera Control Unit (CCU) that can deliver considerably faster focus exposure adjustment with sudden changes of environmental light conditions.
The upcoming MediaTek Helio P20 SoC also brings on board dual SIM 4G VoLTE support with the 4G LTE WorldMode modem. It also includes AI capabilities like face unlock, smart photo album and single-cam/dual-cam bokeh effect. On the connectivity front, the chipset supports Beidos, Galileo, Glonass, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, FM Radio and WiFi 802.11 a/b/n/ac.
“With support for high-quality dual camera photography, AI enhancements, and incredible power efficiency, the Helio P22 sets a new bar for accessibility to premium features. We expect continued device maker wins and consumer growth in this segment with MediaTek’s new Helio P22 chipset,” said TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit, in a press statement while announcing the new SoC.
