Good news for Sony E-Mount mirrorless camera enthusiasts. A new prime lens, called the SIGMA 16 mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens, has been developed exclusively for the Sony E-Mount mirrorless cameras. This new lens is in keeping with the recent trend in prime lenses, which have gained currency in recent times. Prime lenses have a fixed focal length, as opposed to the zoom lens.
Sony has been launching a steady stream of cameras, including the Sony Alpha 7R III, which we have covered previously.
The new SIGMA 16 mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens is a member of the APS-C format. In fact, it is the first lens in the APS-C format which offers a 24mm focal length as well as F1.4 brightness. Onboard is an array of optical systems which feature a great variety of high-tech, as well as high-end components. Some of these include as many as three FLD glass elements, besides two SLD glass elements, as well as two molded glass aspherical elements. All these elements will result in great images.
This new optical system has two great features: one will ensure that all optical aberrations are minimized and the other will ensure that there is an outstanding resolution even at a wide-open aperture as well as throughout the entire aperture range. Installed on the lens is a stepping motor for autofocus: it offers a quicker as well as a smoother response. All these operations are done but there is a very quiet performance which, experts say, is quite amazing.
The SIGMA 16 mm F1.4 DC DN lens is also dust resistant and is totally splash proof. The last bit is pretty important because these features are important for a great landscape lens. This new SIGMA lens is manufactured on the TSC, or Thermally Stable Composite, process. Lenses manufactured on the TSC allows expansion and contraction depending on the changes in temperature. Such characteristics are essential for use in outdoor environments and are also ideal for rough use.
